Over the past few years I have developed a habit and a bit of a love for reading. I mainly enjoy fiction and classic novels. However, more recently I have started reading non-fiction books and I am really enjoying it.
As we are all aware, people don’t have as much free time as they used to. Even when they do, they are not likely to spend it reading a book. More and more people are turning to the internet for short pieces of information when they want to find something out and I find this a bit sad. Nothing can beat a book when it comes to improving your knowledge!
That is why I want to invite you to join me in a reading challenge this year. Choose an amount of books that you think you can reasonably read this year and then add one or two to that number in order to challenge yourself. I decided on forty which is actually quite a big ask when you think about it but I am determined to do it.
Drop a comment if you are interested and I look forward to discussing your most recent reads with you. I will provide recommendations and perhaps, if some of you would like, I will make another post giving some helpful tips on how to reach your goal.
Thanks for reading.
I’m more concerned about finding time to read than picking an arbitrary number to reach in the year. That said, I started out 2017 with a goal to read 15 books. I’ve logged 6 so far, even though some of those are comic books – so I’m going to increase my goal to at least 25, since I definitely plan on reading more graphic novel / comic book collections later this year. Either way, I’m not going to stress if I don’t come close to my goal, because when that happens, I tend to speed read (and poorly, at that, missing a lot of information in the process).

That’s great to hear! The most important thing in my mind is that you read what you enjoy. When you read what you love you tend to get caught up in the book and then reading becomes fun. Although contrary to the idea of the post, I think it is much better to read books you love slowly and take in every word as opposed to rushing through books in order to complete your goal.

Haha. Yeah, the speed I read is somewhat of a paradox sometimes. If I really like the book I tend to rip through it. But I find that reading speed to be different than speed reading in order to just ‘get through it’. Hard to describe but I’m sure you get what I mean!

I actually understand what you mean perfectly because it is something I experience myself. There is definitely a difference between “speed reading” and “reading at speed” haha. The whole speed reading idea seems too forced to me. If you really want to read something, you will naturally read it faster.

I love to read as well but I found myself with very little time and carrying around books is no longer practical like it was when I was younger. Luckily for Christmas I got a kindle reader and I connected it to my Public Library using my library card and have been reading more often. It’s a small device so I can take it with me and the battery lasts forever.

Yes me too! I find that reading helps me to relax in the spare time that I do have. I also have started to use an e reader and love the practicality of it and the fact I find it much easier to use in bed before i go to sleep as opposed to an actual book.

I’ve recently been reading The Glassblower. I’m only about 25% through but so far it has captured my attention.

That’s great to hear, especially since you’ve managed to find something you like. I might have to try reading that at some point. 🙂
